What’s your waistline like?

Do you have some extra fat on your waistline that could do with melting away?  Here are some great reasons why decreasing your waist is good for you.

  1. Heart Disease; you are more likely to suffer from heart disease if you have excess fat around your stomach.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes is much more prevalent in those with larger waistlines. You can be up to 3 times more likely to develop diabetes if your waist is over 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.
  3. Blood pressure; losing inches from your waist can help to lower your blood pressure and avoid the need for medication.
  4. Living Longer; you are more likely to live longer if your waist is kept trim. Lower muscle mass, and higher belly fat can lead to metabolic disorders and early death.
  5. Sleep; you will sleep better if you have a smaller waist. The heavier you are, the more likely you are to snore or suffer from sleep apneoa.

If these reasons have convinced you to start trimming your waistline, then here are some ways to help you get started.

  1. Find your WHY. If you understand why you want to lose weight, and have a good reason, then the motivation will help you to succeed.
  2. MOVE more. Look at how much you move, if you have a desk job, get up and move every hour.  If you know your steps per day, then work on increasing them a few hundred steps at a time.
  3. Stay CALM. If you are stressed, then your body will release cortisol, which will stimulate your appetite, slow your metabolism and encourage stubborn fat to stick to your tummy.
  4. Do you have someone who can hold you accountable for your actions?  Have a weekly weigh in, or a step competition, which will help you stay focused.
  5. Eat PROTEIN at every meal. Protein helps you feel full and helps muscles to rebuild.
  6. Most of us don’t drink enough water.  If you don’t like water, try a herbal tea or flavoured water with mint, cucumber, or even strawberries.
  7. Cut down on SUGAR. When we are stressed or tired we tend to turn to sugar to keep us going.  Cutting back on sugar will stop your body storing as much fat in the abdomen area.
  8. PORTION Control. Watch your portion size.  If you eat off of a large plate, swap it for a smaller plate or a pasta bowl.
